Live well. Feel stronger. Perform better.

Living through a pandemic has become a life changing experience for me. The biggest change I have experienced so far is the social distancing that prevents me from shaking hands or giving a little hug to friends and keeping my distance from strangers as I am walking or jogging. Although these self-imposed barriers are for the common good, it is a significant change from my ingrained pre-pandemic social behaviours.

And even more recently, masks are becoming a requirement to enter public and commercial areas. These protection measures are very important, but if we just focus on external hygiene protection techniques, we are forgetting about the very important piece of the puzzle. What I am referring to is strengthening our immune systems.  A recent research paper written in the journal of Brain, Behavior, and Immunity that stated: “now more than ever, wider access to healthy foods should be a top priority and individuals should be mindful of healthy eating habits to reduce susceptibility to and long-term complications from COVID-19” (Butler et Barrientos, 2020). Health and wellness research have shown that adopting a healthy lifestyle will improve your quality of life and make you more resilient to illness and stress.

From an organizational perspective, during the recent COVID-19 restrictions, I have been impressed with how retail stores are taking care of the physical space of employees and clients, although this is a step in the right direction, we also need to find sustainable ways to make businesses profitable, and at the same time create a win-win situation for employees and the organization. One very effective place to start optimizing profitability is by investing in the health and wellness of people. Studies have shown that providing strategic and customized wellness programs to your employees provides positive impacts on all levels of the organization.  Promoting this message to a workforce often creates a higher level of engagement from employees resulting in increased performance and a stronger resiliency during times of disruption or when the situation is out of their control.

As more and more companies realize the importance of employee health on the bottom line, the health and wellness approach is no longer thought of as a luxury, but has become more valued, and as a result is being considered as a very important best business practice.
